Re-Construction Of Nerul Sri Ayyappa Temple

In 1988, the Nerul Sri Ayyappa Seva Samiti requested CIDCO to allot a plot of 1500 square meters for constructing an Ayyappa Temple at Nerul. After 7 years of continued persuasion, CIDCO allotted a plot of land admeasuring 452 square meters at Sector- 17 in November, 1995.

Within a record time of six months of taking possession of the plot, the Samiti constructed Sanctum Sanctorum for Lord Ayyappa, Devi Bhadra and Lord Ganapati. The consecration of temple and installation of idols were held on 19th June 1996. Thereafter daily poojas and other spiritual/ devotional activities have been performing regularly in the temple.

Rapid development of the township, changed environment of the existing temple complex and increase in attendance of devotees for daily worship, especially on auspicious days and festivals, compelled the Samiti to conduct traditional way of ascertaining the will of Lord through astrology (Devaprasnam). The popular astrologers revealed the urgent need of reconstruction of the existing temple complex with permanent structure strictly based on the temple architectural specification and Vastu shastra. In order to implement the project, the Samiti formed a project-cum-technical committee consisting of 9 honorary members. The committee consult with the board of trustees and other members of the Samiti for their constructive suggestions from time to time during the execution of the project.

The Samiti invited the eminent temple architect BRAHMASHRI KANIPPAYOOR KUTTAN NABOODIRIPAD to the temple and he prepared the architectural designs and other details of the proposed temple complex, in consultation with the temple Tanthri and the astrologers.

Samiti had to pay Rs 33 Lakhs to CIDCO for this plot.

The temple architect suggested to keep the temple complex 1.5 Mtr above the road level and as such it was necessary to raise the basement to match the level of the proposed temple complex.

As per the finalized plan, the presiding deity Lord Ayyappa, upadevadas viz, Devi Bhadra, Lord Ganapati, Lord Sri Krishna, Lord Vettakkoru Makan (Shiva) and Lord Subrahmanyan will have separate sreekovils and Nagadevata will have nagathara.

Lord Ayyappa, Lord Shiva, Lord Sri Krishna and Naga Raja/ Naga Yakshi will be facing west. Devi Bhadra, Lord Ganapati and Lord Subrahmanyan will be facing east.

Foundations for Lord Ayyappa and Devi Bhadra temple are from the ground. In view of the structural and other loads of temple and allied services, Shri K R Suresh of M/s Studi Arch and Shri Ajit Tyagi of M/s Optimum Consultant were appointed as Civil Architect and Structural Engineer respectively to monitor the project.

Shri K C Nagraj, Superintending Engineer (Retd.) CIDCO, who was the Project Consultant of Socio Welfare Complex, willingly offered his services of Project Management Consultancy for the temple project.

M/s Saurabh Builders and Contractors were awarded the civil work being the lowest bidder.

Civil work (as contracted and certain additional works required for the project) have since been completed by the contractor. Towards the second stage of construction, (ie construction of sreekovils of Lord Ayyappa and upadevadas) tenders were invited from contractors in the field of temple construction in Kerala. Offer received from Sri Sankara Narayanan Namboodiri, Kunnamkulam, was found to be the lowest. After due evaluation and negotiations, the sreekovil construction was awarded to Sri Sankara Narayanan Namboodiri on 12th June, 2008. All sreekovils will be constructed with granite stones as per the traditional temple design. Wooden roof with copper sheet covering have been considered for Lord Ayyappa and Devi Bhadra. For all other sreekovils, roof will be considered in the third phase of construction of the project. Sreekovil construction work was started on 21st June, 2008, in Kerala. Temple Thanthri Brahmashree Shasthrusarman Namboodiripad performed the pooja at the work site in the presence of representatives from the Samiti.

Before completion of the sreekovil work as contracted, action will be taken to start the following work in phase III -

construction of chuttmbalam (RCC columns have already been provided)

construction of Valiyambalam (RCC columns have already been provided)
